On Mayport Road, the New Lane Layout Is Catching Up to the 1200 Block

How many people on Mayport Road are actually trying to stop there? The road has six lanes, three in each direction, and it carries traffic toward Hanna Park, Naval Station Mayport and the ferry. Jacksonville Today's September food guide opened with that habit in mind. Its advice to anyone whose only connection to the road "has been while driving to Hanna Park" was to slow down.

The state is now building that advice into the pavement. A $9.6 million Florida Department of Transportation project takes one travel lane out of each direction and gives the space to people on foot and on bikes. In the meantime, the busiest block on the road has grown into the kind of place a slower street serves best: one strip of storefronts where you can have breakfast, a beer, a cocktail and pizza.

Six lanes become four, mostly while you sleep

Construction started on Monday, June 15, 2026, and FDOT expects to finish in fall 2027, which leaves about another year of work. The plan has been around longer than the cones. The City of Atlantic Beach says it grew out of safety and traffic-calming discussions that began in 2018. The city's project notice describes the goal as a corridor that "safely integrates local neighborhoods with surrounding commercial businesses."

What is being built, per FDOT's project page:

  • A northbound shared-use path and a southbound designated bike lane from Atlantic Boulevard to Dutton Island Road, built in the lane that is being removed on each side
  • Milling and resurfacing from Atlantic Boulevard to Seventh Street
  • New traffic signals, lighting, drainage, curb and gutter, signage and pavement markings
  • Bridge and retaining-wall repair, including spall repair, cleaning and coating
  • Contractor: J.B. Coxwell Contracting, Inc.

The schedule matters most for anyone heading to a 6 a.m. breakfast or a Saturday night out. FDOT does not allow lane closures on Mayport Road from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Most of the work happens at night, Sunday through Thursday, with some daytime work Monday through Friday. News4JAX reported that FDOT's fall 2027 estimate depends on weather and unforeseen circumstances.

The city's reasoning sits in its own project notice. Fewer lanes and fewer conflict points slow drivers down, and the city cites crash reductions of 19% to 47% for the technique. FDOT's traffic studies found the four-lane layout would not create significant bottlenecks, and upgraded signalized intersections are part of the plan for that.

The 1200 block already runs at walking pace

The best evidence that Mayport Road can support a slower street is a single shopping strip. The photo at the top of Jacksonville Today's guide shows one parcel with a distillery, a taproom and pizza spot, a MICHELIN-recommended breakfast restaurant and a reservation-only tiki speakeasy. On the businesses' own sites, the addresses fall within twenty numbers of each other.

  1. Eggboy, 1241 Mayport Road. It opens first, at 6 a.m., and serves until 2:30 p.m. every day. When the MICHELIN Guide covered the rest of Florida this spring, Jacksonville Today reported on May 29 that Eggboy was among the Northeast Florida restaurants added. The Duvalist noted that it was one of three Duval County additions. The other two are San Marco dining rooms, The Bearded Pig and Rue Saint-Marc. The recognition is a MICHELIN Recommended listing, not a star or a Bib Gourmand. Chef Raymond Johnston calls the place "the new American diner," according to The Duvalist. The menu runs to breakfast sandwiches, burgers and burritos. Named items include the Santa Maria breakfast sandwich, the BEC, the outlaw burrito and a gravy biscuit. Jacksonville Today suggests adding a cortadito or café con leche.
  2. Reve Brewing and Bones Pizza, 1237 Mayport Road. This is a brewery and taproom with a wood-fired pizza kitchen. Jacksonville Today recommends the crust dippers, including a house truffle aioli and a ranch made by Sub Cultured, the sandwich shop down the road. Reve also hosts a Tiki Weeki event every August.
  3. Grey Matter Distillery, 1221 Mayport Road. Founded in 2014, it was Jacksonville's first craft distillery. It makes Carve Craft Vodka, Live Oak Whiskey, Mayport Moonshine and Ribault Rum, and offers tours, tastings, cocktails and monthly events like trivia and live music.
  4. Mayport Garden Club. This reservation-only tiki speakeasy is open Thursday through Saturday and makes cocktails with curated rums and house-made spirits and cordials.

Those four cover breakfast through late evening without a second parking spot. The road outside is getting a path along one curb and a bike lane along the other, which fits that kind of evening well. That matches the city's stated aim for the project, which is to connect the neighborhoods on either side of Mayport Road to the businesses along it.

The older storefronts the path will connect

The 1200 block draws the press, but Jacksonville Today's guide makes clear that the rest of the corridor was built over decades by smaller places. The new path and bike lane will run along a good stretch of them. Some of the oldest:

  • VooSwar Restaurant and Lounge has been a gathering spot since 1963. It has an indoor tiki bar, murals by local artists, live music, pool tables and a light-up dance floor. The fried pork chop sandwich is a regular recommendation.
  • Choi's Chinese Food Drive Thru has served the neighborhood for two decades.
  • Casa Leon Mexican Cuisine has been on the corridor since 2012 and serves its margaritas by the pitcher.

Newer arrivals:

  • Pie Heaven Bakery Café at 1980 Mayport Road is in a remodeled cottage and sells whole pies and slices, sweet and savory. Jacksonville Today says to grab the tomato basil cheddar soufflé when it is on the menu.
  • Sub Cultured began as a cart outside Home Depot and now has a takeout spot known for pressed sandwiches and the Obscene Poutine.
  • Hangar Bay Café and Gallery serves ramen and fried chicken. Owner Chris Straw chose that pairing after retiring from the Navy, when he found no one on Mayport Road serving either. Naval aviation art hangs throughout the room.
  • Mayport Brewing Co. has 40 taps, duckpin bowling, trivia, and food from The Burger Galaxy food truck.
  • For coffee, Zap Cat pours espresso and pour-over made with rotating specialty beans. 1985 Coffee Shop & Events posts monthly flight specials.

The guide also lists Pho Viet, The Juicy Seafood Mayport, Col. Mustard's Phabulous Smash Burgers, which used to be Dano's Diner, Simply Tasty Thai, Cabalen, Tony Pepperoni Pizza Bar, A&A Ice Cream and Olympia Café. These are strip-mall storefronts with modest prices, most marked "$" or "$$" in the guide.

The city is investing on the side streets too

The city's work in this part of Atlantic Beach doesn't stop at the curb. At the Marsh Oaks Community Center, 100 W. First St., a new community garden takes up the front yard. The city says it was established in July 2026 and is run by city staff. A March 2026 City Commission staff report says Nature Connect Florida offered the design, materials and installation as an in-kind donation worth about $65,000, paid for entirely by the donor.

The public grand-opening celebration is Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026, at Beaches Veterans Memorial Park, 1 W. First St., next to the community center. The schedule:

  • 4 to 5:30 p.m.: garden party
  • 5 p.m.: ribbon cutting
  • 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.: the city's 2nd Annual Environmental Stewardship Awards

The city encourages garden-party attire and has an RSVP form on its event page.

Garden membership is open to Atlantic Beach residents. The city's 2026 membership agreement lists $75 for a full 4-by-8-foot box and $37.50 for a half 2-by-8-foot box, which is reserved for residents with disabilities. Mid-year joiners pay a prorated $6.25 a month, and annual dues are due by Jan. 4, 2027. When every box is taken, new applicants go on a waitlist. The fees go toward water, liability insurance and upkeep.

The same building is also getting a permanent patriotic mural. Its theme includes military tributes, the civic values of honor, service and sacrifice, and regional wildlife. The city set a target completion of November 2026.
